Literally – from the ground up.
Before there’s a meal.
Before there’s a harvest.
Before there’s a blossom.
Before there’s a sprout.
Before there’s even a seed.
There’s preparation. And lots of it!
Something our followers should know about us – Jeff is the meticulous one.
And by meticulous, I mean conscientiously, fastidiously, painstakingly so.
So after the soil was plowed and tilled again and again, he began the preparations for the four corner posts of the hoop house.
Ever heard the proverb “Cut Once, Measure Twice”?
What a simple little phrase that reminds us of the importance of careful planning and double-checking before taking action!
Jeff’s proverb for hoop house building would be more like “Measure a Dozen Times and Stake Once.”
Seriously, his methods for preparing for corner posts would excite the geometry teachers of the world. This angle and that angle compared to this line and that corner.
Parallel
Perpendicular
Right Angles
Yes – we do use math in life, apparently.
And at the end of the day, all the preparation was worth it. Sturdy square corner posts aided in completion (everything fit into place!) and provided a firm structure for the hoop house.
Enjoy this video for a quick overview of the preparations for our very first hoop house (high tunnel greenhouse) build. The hoop house is the secret to extending our growing season here in Texas. Preparation is key, and this video shows the importance of thoughtful design. Watch as we prep the ground with careful measurements and set the four corner posts. This build was a labor of love, learning, and lots of measuring tape! Follow along to see how we did it. Whether you’re dreaming of your own backyard greenhouse or just love watching DIY farm projects come to life, you’re in the right place.
And stay tuned! Hoop House Number 2 will come with more detailed, technical videos of the step by step build process.
