The Dogs are Packing – Summer’s Slow Surrender

Remi gets invited to hula hoop, but she opts for a rest instead.

Here in North Texas, we are certainly living in the dog days of summer! Ozone alerts are part of the daily forecast. The kids are back in school, and that seems fine since it is too hot to play outside all day anyway.

But there is light at the end of the blazing tunnel. North Texas always gives a few tell tale signs to help us hang on through the most sweltering of days. Here’s a list of sure signs that summer is melting away:

  1. Friday Night Lights break the dawn. Two-a-days start, but in order to get enough practice time in before the heat, players beat the sun to the field.
Texas high school football players hit the field before the sun does!

2. That first cricket. Soon he will be joined by his swarm of cousins, but that early-arriver signals cooler days ahead. This guy showed up on the back porch practicing his stridulation to attract a special friend.

This early-arriver will soon be joined by hundreds of friends.

3. A hot air balloon returns to the sky, signaling cooler morning temperatures.

Cooler morning temperatures allow the beautiful hot air balloons to soar again.

4. Sunflowers start to pop up around town. Soon they will cover dry, barren fields, and our social media feeds will be filled with sunflower pictures.

The season’s first sunflowers bloom.

5. This picture has a taste and smell – IYKYK. Hot lake-water temperatures allow algae growth, and water has that distinct summer taste and smell.

Water has that “special” late-summer-season taste and smell.

6. Charlotte has spun her web, ready to feast on those late summer pests.

Our “Charlotte” spiders return at the end of summer, spinning massive webs to catch the peskiest of pests.
